What is the NUMBERING project
The numbering of natural products (NPs) is a highly complex issue. Although, in theory, it is derived from the biosynthesis of each molecule or chemical class, in practice this is often not feasible and frequently follow the general IUPAC rules of chemical entities. This results in mixed numbering schemes that are often obscure and may conceal the natural origin. Moreover, correct numbering provides significant insight into a NP compound.
What is our goal?
It is time to take a fresh look at the proper numbering of NPs.
Given the availability of numerous modern tools, the field is now well positioned to redefine NP numbering with the aim of achieving greater uniformity, consistency, and a renewed perspective in pharmacognosy and natural products chemistry
